I GREW UP AND STILL LIVE IN THE WYNYARD AREA. I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY THIS COUNTRY AND HAVE THOUGHT DEEPLY ABOUT THE PLACE WE CHOOSE TO LIVE OUR LIFE IN. I AM A PRACTICING ARTIST AND SECONDARY ART TEACHER: A MOTHER, A WIFE, AND A PART OF THE LOCAL ARTS COMMUNITY. IN MY PRACTICE I AM INSPIRED TO EXPLORE MANY MEDIUMS, TO CONSTANTLY LEARN, AND PLAY WITH PROCESSES. RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN DRAWN TO NATURAL MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTS: EXTRACTING THE BEAUTY FROM THE COUNTRY AND REPRESENTING IT THROUGH ART: TO CAPTURE MOMENTS OF THE LAND AROUND US. I CREATE A PERSONAL HISTORY AND CONNECT WITH A LAND THAT HAS HAD ITS LONG HISTORY ERASED BY MAN WITHOUT A STUTTER. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS IDEA FOR A FEW YEARS: THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION, OF EXTRACTING AND FORGING COLOURS, PLAYING WITH BINDERS AND PRACTICING APPLICATION, THESE WORKS WERE FORMED. NATURE: ITS HUGENESS AND IN THE MICRO: IN THE BRIGHT AND IN THE DULL: IN THE TEXTURES AND THE SMOOTH: IN THE WEATHER AND THE WARMTH OF THE SUN: THE CLEANNESS OF THE WATER AND WITH THE AIR THAT ROLLS FROM THE SEA: THE TOXINS IN ITS PLANTS AND ANIMALS: NONE OF THIS CAN BE CAPTURED AND CELEBRATED IN ANY ART WORK. INSTEAD, WE CAN REPRESENT ONLY A TINY BIT OF OUR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, AND GLORIFY THESE MOMENTS IN THE ALTERS OF OUR PERSONAL SPACES

Our second year of Undercurrent was a huge success. The program was wildly supported by the locals with many and varied mediums. We had a successful and exciting opening night supported by many of our North West Coast locals and businesses. We'd like to especially mention and give a big thanks to the Waratah- Wynyard Council , along with Rural Health Tasmania for contributing to the prize pool this year.
Our major award winners for the Undercurrent Project were:
1st - Kim Laughran - $800
2nd- Kelly Slater (Not the surfer) - $600
3rd- Joe Lake - $200
Many Congratulations to our prize winners and their contributions to the undercurrent project, along with everyone who came along and entered. We cant wait for next year and what it has to offer !
A huge congratulations to everyone involved in our Off the Wall too exhibition.
We had a great amount of artworks being presented from our friends of ArtsCape followed by a huge opening and visitor numbers.
This is the second time that ArtsCape has run this exhibition. Friends of ArtsCape were invited to share artwork from their own person collections.
The best thing about this exhibition are always the stories that evolved out of displaying pieces. Every artwork speaking about something from the artist or the member that chose to display that item from their collection.
ArtsCape committee would like to thank everyone involved in making this the great success that it was. If you missed out this time, make sure to keep your ears open for the next Off the Wall event.
